Château Pape Clément

France / Bordeaux

Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest and best-known Grand Cru wineries in Bordeaux and owes its name to Pope Clement V (Bertrand de Got). When he was made pope in 1305, the château was given his name. With this name, it's still causing a sensation today. The winery is located in Pessac, only a few kilometres from the city of Bordeaux and cultivates an area of 32.5 hectares, mainly on gritty-sandy loam and limestone soils with an iron-rich subsoil. Red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) are planted on 30 hectares and white wine (Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle) on 2.5 hectares. The finesse-rich and powerful red wines from Château Pape Clément are known for their spicy, fruity aroma and their elegance. The prerequisite for this character and excellent quality is pre-selection in the vineyard and extremely gentle processing of the grapes. The red wines usually mature for 18 to 20 months in barrique barrels with different properties, in which they develop a fine, delicate wood note. It is not without reason that wine connoisseurs consider them to be of exceptional quality and on a par with the Premier Crus.

This is also reflected in the many top ratings for these expressive wines from Château Pape Clément.
