The history of this winery dates back to 1367, and the property around the Castello might have been in the Spinola family since around the year 250. Massimiliana Spinola and her husband Henry Finzi-Constantine, who grew up in London, now run the winery with around 20 hectares of vineyards. L'Azienda Vitivinicola Castello di Tassarolo is located in the heart of the Gavi region in Piedmont, surrounded by its own vineyards. The most important grape variety is Cortese di Gavi, along with Barbera and some Cabernet Sauvignon. A speciality is the use of horses rather than tractors on the organic farm. Henry is considered to be one of the pioneers in the use of horses in vineyards. One of the wines was named after Titouan, the first horse used as a workhorse on the farm. What began as an experiment is selling well today. Massimiliana and Henry bottle some of the wines entirely without sulphites.
